When the owners of this 1920s Spanish Revival home in San Jose first walked through its doors, they knew they weren’t just buying a house—they were becoming stewards of a historic treasure.

Designed by the renowned architect Frank Delos Wolfe, the home presented a challenge: preserve its architectural integrity while adapting the design to meet the needs of a busy family with three young children.

The new plan enhanced the home’s flow, modernized the electrical system, and enhanced functionality—all without losing the essence of the original design.

Thoughtful Design Meets Daily Function

The transformation focused on turning architectural challenges into elegant solutions:

  • The Kitchen Reimagined: We broke up a long, narrow galley kitchen by introducing a new butler’s pantry. This addition not only improved storage but brought back a charming, period-appropriate element that feels as if it’s always been there.
  • A “Disappearing” Staircase: A bulky basement staircase at the rear of the kitchen once blocked natural light and views of the yard. We replaced it with a discreet trap door, immediately opening sightlines. Now, the kitchen is flooded with sunlight, and parents can easily keep an eye on the kids playing outside while prepping dinner.
  • The Multi-Tasking Hub: We moved the laundry from a cramped hallway closet into the kitchen, anchored by a new multifunctional countertop. It’s the ultimate “flex” space—serving as a prep area, a folding station, or a quiet spot for a desk.

Exquisite Finishes

To honor the home’s heritage, we meticulously matched new oak flooring to the original wood. The aesthetic is anchored by high-end touches that bridge the gap between “then” and “now”:

  • A stunning La Cornue range
  • Elegant granite countertops
  • A delicate Carrara marble mosaic backsplash

A Home for the Generations

By guiding the selection of paint and furnishings, we ensured every room felt cohesive. The result is a space that honors its 100-year history while being perfectly equipped for the future. It is timeless, functional, and—most importantly—deeply personal.
