Historic estates often possess extraordinary architectural character, yet their interior layouts don’t always reflect the comfort and spaciousness homeowners expect today. That was precisely the opportunity presented in this turn-of-the-century Atherton estate, where we were asked to reimagine three bathrooms while preserving the home’s traditional charm.
Our objective was to introduce greater openness, light, and quiet luxury — all while respecting the residence’s architectural integrity.
Guest Bathroom

.Originally, the guest bath felt dark and compartmentalized. By removing an unnecessary wall and repositioning the vanity, we opened the room visually and created an elegant focal point upon entry.

A Venetian mirror framed by period sconces anchors a furniture-style vanity topped with honed marble. Polished chrome fixtures and an oval vessel sink complete the composition, offering a timeless aesthetic that feels both refined and welcoming.
Boys’ Bathroom

The boys’ bathroom presented a different challenge. Several walls divided the vanity and shower areas, making the room feel considerably smaller than its actual footprint.
By removing these barriers and reconfiguring the layout, the space now reads as a single, expansive room. Intricately molded glass and glazed ceramic tiles introduce texture while remaining faithful to the home’s traditional character. Furniture-quality cabinetry, deep crown moldings, and honed limestone counters and flooring add warmth and architectural depth.
Housekeeper’s Bathroom

In the housekeeper’s bath, the focus was on improving light and visual openness.
Lowering one shower wall to half-height allowed natural light to flow freely through the room, instantly brightening the space. A classic footed vanity painted in creamy white, topped with Emperador Light marble, pairs beautifully with honed limestone flooring and mosaic tile accents.
Though each bathroom serves a different purpose, the final designs share a cohesive sense of openness, elegance, and architectural harmony — demonstrating how thoughtful design can transform even modest spaces.
