Master Bath and Fireplace
Los Altos Hills, CA

An outdated, dark and ordinary bathroom is transformed into a luxurious, inviting, light filled master bathroom with amenities and abundant storage. This 210 sq. remodel was initiated when the commode overflowed and damaged the existing master bath.

Since this destruction required the removal of the entire bathroom floor tile, vanity and tub, the homeowners took the opportunity to enhance the layout, modernize and add amenities.

Functionally, the enhancements included conversion of the existing shower to a steam shower, new radiant heated flooring and the addition of French doors between the bathroom and adjoining master bedroom for more privacy. The deck mounted tub was replaced with a free-standing tub.

Aesthetically, the enhancements included semi-custom cabinetry in a custom grey shade, elegant chandelier lighting and scones. The former dated and dark green tile was replaced with grey and white mosaic tiles, creating a clean, spacious, airy and welcoming space. The owners style and tastes are displayed with the beauty of natural stone tile, matching tile baseboard, and the carefully laid out mosaic inlay to mimic an area rug.

Amenities, included the installation of an Apple ipad on the bathroom wall for their young children to hear their favorite tunes, Apple TV, or the adults to have music, news and the ability to control security functions. A touch screen control panel on the inside shower wing wall allows for customizing colored lights in the shower and various shower heads desired by each user. This also allowed the owner to pre-set a safe shower temperature for three small children in which they can independently and safely start their own shower. The tall linen cabinets provide ample storage, including a built-in jewelry drawer and a built-in laundry hamper below the linen cabinet.

In addition to remodeling the master bath improvements to their adjoining master bedroom was made, such as adding a marble tiled fireplace, niche for TV and replacement of lighting to bring the whole master suite up to date.

It had original oak cabinets, with white tile and dark grout, brass hardware and a brass enclosed shower casing. Even though the vanity area had mirrors across the entire vanity wall with a lighted soffit above, the lighting was dull and inefficient.

The homeowner kept the layout the same but what she chose for her remodel transformed it into serene, yet functional space. Beautiful custom made walnut cabinets, white princess granite counter tops and brushed nickel fixtures and accessories add style and charm to this master bath.

Although not visible in these pictures, while relaxing in the tub, the owner can see straight through to her bedroom windows to her beautiful outdoor garden.

This project begin with a different contractor though, and while visually it was gorgeous, in the original remodel, the built- in bathtub was not installed correctly, leading to constant leaks and potential damage to the home. The homeowner came to us for the “re-do”. It was unfortunate for the client to have had to experience this, however, it provided the opportunity to improve upon her design which resulted in her master bath being aesthetically and functionally perfect. She converted the previously built-in tub to this free-standing tub from BluBathworks. The wainscot west wall, original painted as an accent wall is now wrapped with the unique “Liston Oxford” tile from Porcelanosa, which has the look of real wood, creates the spa feel and adds warmth to the space. Recessed lights wash the wet wall and highlights the texture and color of the “Green Glass” mosaic tile, also from Porcelanosa. Radiant heat was also installed under the large-format thin porcelain tiled floors. This bathroom design also caught the eye of LUXE Linear Drain as two of their 48” stainless steel pattern grate drains were incorporated into this barrier-free zero-threshold shower. As a result, with over 100 other entries, Hammerschmidt was recognized as the winner of their annual shower design contest project photo contest.

Hall/Guest Bath
Los Altos, CA

The owners of this North Los Altos home had us remodel their kitchen (see “Transitional Kitchen Los Altos”) and this upstairs hall bath. We began by converting this hall bath into a hall/guest bath by adding a door into the guest bedroom.

The main objective was to create a contemporary feel with clean lines. The previous bathtub was removed and replaced with this spacious shower with a wide seating area and clean lines of the 24 x 24 AKDO matte tile from floor to ceiling. Additions to the guest bath included an additional sink, radiant heated floors, contemporary chrome plumbing fixtures, heated towel bars and a waterfall shower.

Ooh la la! The formerly dark guest bath became open and airy when the interior walls were removed. A glamorous first impression was created by reframing the door and installing the vanity directly in the entrance. A Venetian mirror flanked by two period sconces, holds court above a furniture-quality vanity, topped with a honed marble countertop and vessel sink.

Removing the the wall between the vanity and shower areas in the boys bath transformed the small rooms into one spacious area. Intricately-molded glass and glazed ceramic tiles, furniture-quality cabinetry, deep crown moldings and soft, honed limestone counters and floors — all in keeping with the home’s traditional architecture — complement the space.

In the housekeeper’s bath, a shower wall was reduced from full height to half height making the room appear twice as large. In addition, a funny wing wall was removed to improve the flow into the room. Honed limestone tile with mosaic tile accents, a classic footed vanity painted creamy white, and an Emperador light marble countertop create a calm, relaxing environment. The three bathrooms were awarded a 2009 NARI Platinum Meta Award. See the awards section for more details.

Features include a soaking tub, walk-in shower and double vanity. The existing stained wood ceiling is used extensively throughout the house. One of the challenges was to stain the new wood on the ceiling, windows, patio doors and half-wall cap to match. Imported from Spain, the ceramic tile on the floor, tub wall, and shower surround, gives the illusion of slate, but resists stains without the need of a sealer. The new patio doors provide access to a back patio that was rarely used and integrate the interior and exterior of the home.

A dated tub with chrome shower doors was transformed into an open curb-less shower. The shower is lined with bamboo-inspired ceramic tiles and flat Venetian Graphite pebbles on the back shower wall to evoke the feeling of a waterfall and continues on the shower floor to the tub resembling a stream. The pebbles provides anti-slip properties, adds interest and carries the nature theme to the tub. Radiant heat was installed in the master bath and warms the Max Black Lappato porcelain tile floors. The master bath vanity top is rare exotic granite with a strong pebble-like pattern called Golden Mariachi. Earth tones and gray colored rocks are embedded in a black background. This fascinating counter was chosen by the client – a piece they fell in love with because of the elements in nature that it represents.
