Cabinets houses the entertainment center, bookcases, and encorporates the fireplace mantle. It replaced several small pieces of furniture and now serves as the room’s focal point. Durango travertine tiles were installed over the original brick fireplace surround and hearth. To allow more natural light into the space, a large bay window was installed in the living room area. Carpet was removed and hardwood floors installed or refinshed in all areas of the home. Terrazzo tile in the entry was replaced with hardwood flooring, inlaid with a custom border. To create the spacious master suite, space was “borrowed” from the living room to make room for a double-vanity, glass block shower and a cedar-floored, walk-in closet. The whole house was brought up-to-date with energy efficient windows, paneled doors, baseboard, crown molding, and recessed lighting. A paint palette of warm neutrals was chosen to further enhance the homes’ light and airy feel.

The existing master bedroom and bathroom were gutted we “borrowed” space from an adjacent bedroom to allow for a more functional and comfortable flow. Rather than the strict formality, the owners wanted to create a casually-elegant and finishes were selected to accomplish this. The cherry vanity cabinet was topped with a honed travertine stone countertop and backsplash – the perfect neutral background for the dramatic ruby-colored glass, vessel sinks. Honed travertine tile was installed on the shower surround and on the floor which were accented with deco tiles in metallic pewter and ruby glass. The vanity mirror received a cherry picture frame, stained to match the cabinetry. Mouth blown glass sconces complete the vanity area. The his-and-hers walk-in closet is conveniently located across from the vanity. In the master bedroom, vaulted ceilings and well-placed windows create a feeling of spaciousness. In the bedroom, a wall of patio doors allows for a private view of the garden and access to the outdoor spa.
This multi-level contemporary home was updated to meet the needs of this growing, active family. Wood windows and a new five-section bow window with seat replaced the snacks and checking e-mails. Additional cabinets conceal a family computer area and TV/stereo center. A new skylight provides natural light that was missing from the space before the remodel.
